Week 43, 2025
27 Oct 2025

Gotta start with a bird photo/screengrab, of course. But I'll come back to birds in a bit.
This week at work:
- I worked on new screenshots for Exist, since we’ve updated how we generate tag colours to match our new design better
- Also worked through a bunch of small fixes and improvements that had been on my list for a while
This week at uni:
- I had a lab test for my statistics class on Monday, which was not fun, but now that it’s over I don’t have to worry about R so much, since there's not much of it in the final exam (phew)
- Lectures finished up for my statistics class, so now it’s revision time before the exam in a few weeks
Other stuff:
- Watched the movie Listers: A Glimpse Into Extreme Birdwatching and really enjoyed it
Recent bird news:

- Crowned eagles UFO and Comet in South Africa have an egg! Their live stream has been down for most of the week, but hopefully incubation is going well and the stream will come back soon
- The ospreys at Port Lincoln gave up on incubation, as all 3 of their eggs weren’t viable. Nobody knows why the eggs were no good after growing for a few weeks, but hopefully they’ll have better luck next year
- In my draft notes I'd written that SE35 (the older sea eagle chick) had branched, but on the weekend there was even bigger news. SE35 tried to make a short flight and missed, ending up on the ground. It's been seen and heard since, but can't fly well enough to get back up to the nest. The wildlife rescue team are keeping an eye on the situation, but hopefully it'll work out okay without any human intervention needed

Links
I keep a list of "useful links this week" in my weekly work notes, which are mostly links to docs or places on the web I found ideas or solutions for work stuff during the week. I keep meaning to include them in my public weeknotes, so this week I'm finally doing that. I'll also add in some non-work links that I found useful/interesting/fun this week, if I can remember them.
- Iterating through dictionary with ForEach: various ideas in the answers to this Stack Overflow question
- Unable to share files between Mac and Android phone via Bluetooth? Here's how to fix it: Bluetooth sharing is a setting in General > Sharing settings on the Mac that’s off by default. So you can pair to an Android device via Bluetooth but then that device still can’t send you any files, and you won’t know why! Worth remembering.
- How do I delete a file from a Git repository?: I made a new git repo and forgot to add a
.gitignoreuntil it was too late. Oops! - Removing Untracked Files with Git Clean: made notes this time, because I do this so rarely that I always have to look it up and double-check it
- Phanpy: web app for Mastodon that has some great features, like collecting replies into threads, and collecting boosts into a carousel
